Keynote
Speaker: John Palfreyman-IBM
Title of Presentation: Pervasive Computing - When Computers Disappear
Abstract: Pervasive Computing is about extending e-business solutions to the new generation of small,
embedded and often mobile devices that are becoming increasingly popular & prevalent. Indeed,
analysts predict that within a few years time, more internet traffic will originate from these devices
than the PC. The presentation will describe IBM's view of the Pervasive Computing / Mobile
e-business marketplace. It will illustrate this view by describing example projects that have been
recently undertaken. IBM are working on extending their current product set which are widely
regarded as the engines of e-business, to use Pervasive Computing technology. The presentation
will describe these activities, focusing on the business benefits that their customer base can gain by
extending their e-business solutions to reach out to the new class of devices.
Bio: John graduated in Engineering and followed a postgraduate course in Applicable Mathematics at
Cranfield, specialising in digital signal processing. Through a varied career with Roll Royce, Decca
Radar and Anaren Microwave, John was involved in defence electronic systems design, working in
systems analysis, system simulation and software design. John then joined Software Sciences where he worked as project manager & business development
manager in the defence division, before moving on to grow an embryonic defence simulation
business from 5 people to 40 people within a 3 year period. John was then seconded to the German
operation of Data Sciences, where he managed an 80 person company specialising in Wholesale
Banking and Industrial Systems development. On return to the UK, John managed the Aerospace division of Data Sciences, working on a
combination of military and civil aerospace projects. During this time, he achieved significant
profitable growth of the division and worked as part of a management team aiming to take the
company through IPO. IBM bought Data Sciences shortly before flotation, and John worked on the
application of new technology from IBM to the Defence and Aerospace business before he moved
into the UK Development Laboratories of IBM where his role expanded to the application of new
technology across the whole spectrum of IBM's projects in EMEA. Through this work, John got
involved in Pervasive Computing, initially in setting up a team in EMEA to deliver solutions to early
adopter customers and later in replicating the success of this team into the Asia Pacific and Americas
geographies.

Title of Presentation: Seagull - Wireless to Host Toolkit
Abstract: This presentation will give an overview of SEAGULL's Wireless-to-Host(tm) solution. The product is a suite of tools
and technology for opening enterprise applications for access from wireless phones or PDAs. SEAGULL

for the wireless paradigm. Build a wireless application framework for handling transactions and data. Manage the
interaction between your host application and your wireless Web server, acting as a gateway from the session-oriented
behavior of business applications to the service-oriented needs of the wireless Web. Without duplicating business logic
that's already working in your enterprise applications. And most importantly, without the time, cost and expertise
required to build a wireless application from the ground up.
